3D Epoxy Swimming Pool Finishes in Abeokuta & Nigeria
Tiled pools in Nigeria fail in a predictable way: grout washes out, individual tiles pop off, and the repair never quite matches. An epoxy pool finish has no tiles and no grout — it is a single continuous waterproof membrane bonded to the shell, so there is nothing to come loose.
ABA Eagle Enterprise coats swimming pools, plunge pools, water features and fountains for hotels, resorts, estates and private homes in Abeokuta, Ogun State and across Nigeria. Finishes range from a plain pool blue through to full 3D scenes — sand, stone, dolphins or a custom design on the pool floor.

A pool is the least forgiving epoxy job we do, because the coating is submerged permanently and under constant chemical attack. Everything depends on getting the shell dry, sound and properly prepared before any resin is applied.
- Drain the pool and let the shell dry out — this can take one to two weeks depending on weather and how long it has held water
- Strip old tiles, failing paint or previous coatings back to the concrete or render
- Grind the shell and cut out any cracks; structural cracks are repaired before coating, never coated over
- Repair the render, then prime with a moisture-tolerant epoxy primer
- Apply the waterproof epoxy build coats to the floor, walls, steps and coping
- Install the 3D print on the pool floor if specified, then pour the clear protective layers
- Full cure before filling — this is a hard rule, not a guideline
Why epoxy instead of tiles or pool paint
- Seamless — no grout lines to wash out and no tiles to detach and cut feet
- Waterproof as a system rather than relying on grout to keep water out of the shell
- Chlorine and pool-chemical resistant once fully cured
- Far easier to clean; algae has no grout to take hold in, so brushing is quicker
- Repairable in place — a damaged patch is ground and re-coated rather than re-tiled
- Allows genuine 3D imagery on the pool floor, which tiling cannot do
Curing and filling — the part people get wrong
The most expensive mistake in pool coating is filling too early. Epoxy reaches its full chemical and water resistance around seven days after the last coat, and putting water and chlorine against a partly cured film will soften and blister it. We hand over a written fill date and we do not shorten it because a hotel wants the pool open for a weekend.
Rain during the works is the other risk. We plan pool projects around the weather and tent the shell where necessary, because a shower on a wet coat means grinding it off and starting that layer again.
Build-up, and why a pool is coated differently from a floor
A pool coating is under permanent immersion and constant chemical attack, which is a completely different duty from a floor that gets wet occasionally. The film has to be continuous and thick enough that no part of it is marginal — a coating that is sound across 99% of the shell and thin at one internal corner will fail at that corner.
- The build goes on in multiple coats rather than one heavy pour, because a thick single coat on a vertical pool wall sags and leaves the top of the wall thinner than the bottom — exactly the wrong distribution.
- Internal corners, the floor-to-wall junction, steps, and the areas around inlets, outlets and lights get extra attention. These are where hydrostatic pressure concentrates and where failures start.
- The coping and waterline band take the most abuse — sunlight, chemical concentration and abrasion from swimmers all act on that one strip.
- The 3D print, where specified, sits on the pool floor beneath the clear protective layers and is never in contact with the water.
How pool coatings fail, and how we avoid it
- Filling before full cure — the single most expensive mistake in pool work. Water and chlorine against a partly cured film soften and blister it, and the only remedy is draining and recoating. Avoided by a written fill date that we do not shorten.
- Osmotic blistering from behind the shell — groundwater pressure pushes moisture through the concrete and lifts the coating from underneath. This is a live risk in Nigeria during the rains, particularly where a pool sits in a high water table. Avoided with a moisture-tolerant primer, and by not leaving a drained shell standing through heavy rain longer than the work requires.
- Coating over loose tiles — every tile that was already debonded eventually detaches and takes the new coating with it. Avoided by sound-testing the whole shell after draining and giving you an honest answer.
- Coating over a structural crack — a moving crack reopens straight through the film. Structural cracks are cut out and repaired before coating, never coated over.
- Rain on a wet coat — a shower during application ruins that layer, which then has to be ground off and redone. Avoided by planning pool work around the weather and tenting the shell where necessary.
- Chemical damage from badly managed water — repeated heavy shocking and wide pH swings shorten the life of any pool surface, epoxy included.
Cost, lifespan and maintenance
Pool coating is priced on the wetted surface area — floor, walls and steps — rather than the plan area, and the shell condition drives the rest. Stripping old tiles and re-rendering a poor shell can cost as much as the coating itself, which is why we always inspect a drained pool before quoting rather than pricing from photographs.
A properly installed epoxy pool finish will typically last eight to twelve years before it wants a refresh coat, depending on how well the water chemistry is managed. Aggressive pH swings and heavy chlorine shocking shorten the life of any pool surface, epoxy included.
Maintenance is ordinary pool care: keep the pH balanced, brush the walls, and avoid dragging metal pool equipment across the floor. A refresh coat is a drain-and-recoat job of about a week, with no tiling involved.
Timeline
Allow two to four weeks end to end for a domestic pool. The drying-out period before work starts is the longest and least predictable part, followed by three to five days of preparation and repair, three to four days of coating, and the seven-day cure before filling. Hotel and resort pools with heavy tile removal or structural repair run longer, and we set out the stages with dates in the quote.

3D Epoxy Swimming Pools — Frequently Asked Questions
Can you coat over the existing tiles in my pool?
Only where every tile is firmly bonded, which is rare in an older pool. Coating over tiles that are already loose simply hides the problem until they detach and take the coating with them. We sound-test the shell and give you an honest answer after draining.
How long must the pool stay empty?
Two to four weeks in total for a domestic pool. Most of that is drying the shell before work starts and the seven-day cure before filling. We give you a firm fill date at handover.
Will chlorine damage the epoxy?
Not once fully cured — the coating is formulated for continuous immersion and chlorinated water. What does shorten its life is badly managed water chemistry, particularly repeated heavy shocking and wide pH swings.
Can the 3D image go on the pool walls as well as the floor?
The floor is where the effect reads best, because you view it through the water from above. We can carry a coloured or graded finish up the walls to complement it, and we will show you a mock-up before printing.
What happens if the surface gets damaged?
A damaged area is ground back and re-coated in place — no tile matching, no visible patch line once the top coat is re-applied. That repairability is one of the main practical advantages over tiling.
Do you work on hotel and estate pools outside Abeokuta?
Yes. We regularly work on hotel and estate pools in Lagos, Ibadan and elsewhere in Nigeria. Travel and accommodation for the crew are stated in the quote up front.
